Year 11 Maths Inspiration Trip
Year 11 students visited the Crescent Theatre in Birmingham for this years Maths Inspiration show. Aoife Hunt hosted the show introducing students to the maths behind crowd control and the simulations she produces to model what is logistically possible before introducing human behaviour. She spoke about her role as a consultant and what that means, the companies she works for and some of the jobs she has done for specific companies.
Hugh Hunt then had the students in a spin! He did a variety of experiments on stage and linked the maths to each of them, so students were able to see the theory and practice working in harmony. Hugh went from bouncy balls, the wall of death and boomerangs to spinning tops to name but a few. A whistle stop tour of the world that spins.
Finally Ben Sparks introduced students to imaginary numbers and did a short history lesson into the numbers that ‘don’t exist’ in his session entitled ‘The Windmills of your Mind’.
A fantastic opportunity to hear from mathematicians that use maths in their careers and where it leads them.
