Careers Event – Employability Skills by the Army
Year 9 enjoyed a careers event run by the Army providing them with some essential employability skills such as teamwork, leadership, and communication.
The morning started with a presentation to understand the job roles within the Army that students may not have expected such as Vets, as well as different career routes that can be taken.
Students were then invited to the field for some practical activities that allowed them to trial some key employability skills in different scenarios. Amongst the wide variety of activities there was a landmine exercise where one student was blindfolded and the other had to communicate effectively to get the blindfolded student through the course without stepping on any ‘landmines’. There was the tyre challenge were groups had to get their whole team from one end to the other without touching the floor using just a tyre and a rope encouraging teamwork and communication. The variety of activities showcased students’ problem-solving skills, teamwork, communication, leadership, perseverance which are all vital regardless of the careers the students choose to progress into.
H. Gilman says ‘my favourite activity was the tyre challenge because it was great fun being pulled across the grass but we had to communicate clearly with people we don’t normally speak to’.
A big thanks to the Army volunteers who gave up their time to run the activities.
